Black Ink Caricatures - The Original Dirty (Bakers) Dozen!

Here's the start of it all... was it really that long ago? Dare I say time flies!

How did it all start? Well, sixth form college was pretty much a non event for me despite doing art as a subject.
I think the thing (or event) that really killed my interest in the lessons was when discussing potential careers I was shot down in flames by the teacher.
I mentioned the aspiration of working for "Squadron Prints" and was told by Mr.R.B that a company like that wouldn't touch me with a barge pole.
Well that kind of cut pretty deep as a teenager, so I thought that if I had no hope of joining them, then I'd work alongside them...
and while those 'A'Level lessons droned on around me, the first seeds of exploring aircraft caricatures were born.

Staying nothing more than doodles for a few years after leaving college, one lazy and not too brilliant summer afternoon the drawing pad came out of retirement as my attention turned to a collection of plastic model aircraft on a shelf in my room.
I'm not sure why now, but the originals of the following caricatures were drawn using a black "Bic" biro on A3 cartridge paper.
Maybe the biro was just the first thing to come to hand...

Black Ink Caricatures - The Second Wave

After a fairly short time the artwork started to develop and grow in complexity,
especially with the aim of getting more mileage from any one caricature design.

From single caricatures of fully marked aircraft, the next stage consisted of complete aircraft, but devoid of any markings.
These designs were then copied - either by hand by tracing over a light box, or if money allowed by photocopying,
and individual markings and title text were then applied on top...
eventually, the black biro was retired (well, run out actually), and along came various incarnations of technical drawing pens.

It wasn't long before the Edding 1800 series of "Profipen" was found, and I'm still using these to this day.
